New Delhi: Amid the raging debate over the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A copy of the letter has also been sent to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, in a letter to PM Modi, urging the Muslim Personal Law Board not to impose a uniform civil code on the Muslim community.
The board has said that this serious topic requires serious discussion and dialogue. The AIMPLB has said that it expects protection of religion and constitutional rights of the Muslim community such as nikah, divorce, succession, in view of the seriousness of the issue. The letter, written by Dr Moin Ahmed Khan, national general secretary of the Muslim Personal Law Board, said that all religious groups in the country have constitutional permission to marry as per their religious customs.
The Muslim Board has said that many communities, including the Muslim community, have the rights of marriage and divorce as per their religious law, pre-existing since India's independence. The Muslim community has been protected under the Muslim Application Act in this regard since 1937. The letter said that even after independence, in a debate in this regard (Uniform Civil Code) in the Constituent Assembly, the chairman of the Preamble Committee, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, had said that the government should leave it to the religious community and not implement it till a consensus is reached.
