New Delhi: Maulana Umar Gautam, accused of conversion, has suffered a major setback from the High Court. Umar Gautam did not get any relief from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. The high court has dismissed a demand to stay media reporting in Umar Gautam's case. A division bench of the high court has rejected Umar Gautam's plea. The court commented that the media has the right to reporting. The media cannot be prevented from reporting in a case without a solid basis. The high court has also given a clean chit to the UP police in the Umar Gautam case.

The court in its judgement said that nothing objectionable was in the press note of the UP police. The press note issued on June 20 did not contain any confidential and objectionable information, only information about the arrest information and its basis. The division bench of the high court had reserved its order on July 2 after hearing Umar gautam's plea. A division bench of Justices Ramesh Sinha and Vikas Srivastava has ruled.

The division bench of the high court made a landmark observation saying that even under the verdict of the apex court judge, Justice Chandrachud, such cases cannot be directly intervened. The court had asked Umar Gautam's lawyers, "Why should the media be prevented from reporting the case?" Maulana Umar Gautam had filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court seeking a stay on the ongoing reports against him in the media. Umar Gautam alleged that the media was reporting wrongly. He is being tried in the media without any court decision. Umar Gautam had also accused the media of defaming the media by misreporting under pressure from the government.
