CHENNAI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has begun an internal investigation into an alleged sexual assault of a student on the campus premises.
In her complaint, the victim said that on July 25, when her companion was riding to her hostel room through a dimly lit area on campus, a man in his early 20s pounced on her friend.
Although the top institute has started an internal investigation, it hasn't yet filed a police report because the student wasn't all that interested in doing so.
The friend of the student who survived the assault informed the institution about an incident that occurred a few days earlier. The institute launched an inquiry right away, looked through camera footage, and supplied pictures of around 300 individuals who matched the student's description, according to a statement from IIT Madras.
It was also stated that the victim was unable to recognise anyone, and a parade of 35 contract labourers who were working that night was also conducted for identification. The institute further stated that a security officer is stationed every 100 metres and that the gates are appropriately locked.
According to the victim's companion's complaint to the institution, "it was fate that spared my buddy after a lengthy fearful struggle, she managed to fight him off and ran back on foot, bruised and mentally damaged with a broken cycle."
Senior police officer said: "Raids are being done to arrest his accomplice. The accused is on 4 days police remand. Further action will be taken following disclosure during interrogation in the remand time.
The probe and internal investigation would continue until the offender is found, the IIT Madras said.
