MELBOURNE: Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc should continue to be the national team's quicks in all three formats of the game, according to former Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath, but he has suggested that they be given longer rests to recover.
McGrath also commended Cummins for choosing to forego the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season and stated that speed bowlers' schedules needed to allow for adequate recovery.
The trio's underwhelming performance in the ICC T20 World Cup at home has sparked debate over whether they should continue in all forms or whether Cricket Australia (CA) should look ahead to the T20 World Cup in 2024.
McGrath believes the players have adjusted to the possibility of playing in all three formats, though.
The West Australian reported that McGrath said, "The bowlers have adjusted." One of the top T20 bowlers in the world is Josh Hazlewood. He has demonstrated that in the past by the methods he has used. Just by virtue of the regions in which he bowlers, Pat Cummins is adaptable. When Mitchell Starc gets it right, Starcy is a match-winner. He is on par with everyone else in the globe. I have no objections to our bowling strategy there. According to the report, McGrath thinks resting bowlers for brief periods of time or individual matches has more of an impact on a player's mindset than resting the body because Australia will be playing 15 Test matches over the course of the next nine months in addition to getting ready for the ODI World Cup in India next year.
"My biggest danger of getting hurt was resting bowlers throughout a season from a game here to a game there," McGrath remarked. "That's just a band-aid fix. I want everyone on the team, but especially the bowlers, to be functioning at 95% or above. He feels that bowlers should instead be given appropriate, lengthy pauses.
"Playing for Australia should continue to be the ultimate goal. The best cricket is still Test cricket. Fast bowlers should take a little time off from bowling because both bowling and jogging wear you out. And you require that strength to prevent injury. It's a problem that they might not be getting that as frequently these days. Cummo (Cummins) has publicly declared he won't attend the upcoming IPL. You spend your off-season there, build your strength, and prepare for the following season. You become like a car that never refuels if you don't do it. You will run out sooner or later.
