Moscow: In response to recent rumours that Washington is looking to resume its "top-secret programmes" in Ukraine, Russia's ambassador to the US has issued a warning that using special operators on the battlefield would result in direct US involvement in the conflict.

When asked to comment on a report that claimed the Pentagon may resume its covert operations in Ukraine, published in the Washington Post on Friday, Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said that although the claim has not been verified by officials, it would represent a significant escalation.

Discussions about the potential dispatch of Special Forces to Ukraine on the pages of one of the major American media outlets, he observed, "are very remarkable."

Such publications once more attest to the obsession with the unattainable dream of handing Russia a strategic defeat and the willingness to take unimaginable risks in this pursuit that exists in Washington.

According to a Post report, military officials are currently "urging Congress" to approve funding for top-secret initiatives that were put on hold when the conflict with Russia began almost a year ago. The Pentagon reportedly hopes to resume the projects in 2024, though no decision is anticipated until the fall.

While the Post speculates that American commandos might operate from a neighbouring nation, it is still unknown whether President Joe Biden will approve deployments of American commandos. Two "irregular warfare surrogate programmes" were run by US Special Operations troops in Ukraine prior to the conflict, one of which involved sending local Ukrainian operatives on "surreptitious reconnaissance missions in Ukraine's east."

The US involvement in the conflict, according to Antonov, is leading the world towards "unpredictable consequences," and he continued by calling Washington a "accomplice" to the conflict in Ukraine.

Since last year, Washington has approved more than $30 billion in direct military aid to Kiev, providing a vast array of heavy weapons and other equipment. The Kremlin has repeatedly urged against foreign military involvement in Ukraine, claiming that such involvement would only serve to prolong the conflict and pledging to destroy any Western military equipment brought into use.
