Patna: Bihar is going to change the election of mayor and deputy mayor. For this, Raj Bhavan has sent an ordinance to the Law Department to amend the Municipal Act. Under this, 19 municipal corporations of the state including Muzaffarpur and Patna will now elect mayors and deputy mayors in place of ward councillors.
The amendments to the same Ordinance will also apply to 263 municipal bodies across the state. The Chairman and Deputy Chairman will also be elected by direct voters. After this Ordinance, it has been decided that the fate of the mayor and deputy mayor will be in the hands of the people in the municipal elections from April to June this year.
For your information, state that sections 23 and 25 of the Municipalities Act, 2007 have been amended in the amendment of the Ordinance. Both sections are related to changes in the election of chief councillor i.e. mayor and deputy mayor respectively and bringing a no-confidence motion against both. Under the new rule, when ward councillors do not elect the mayor and deputy mayor, wards will not be able to bring a no-confidence motion with a one-third majority of the capacity of councillors.
