A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives to promote the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. by US veteran civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis. A budgetary allocation of US $ 150 million for the next 5 years has been demanded. Presenting the bill, he said that the House Bill (HR 5517), presented to commemorate Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, is one of the world's 2 largest democracies. According to media reports, the bill also proposes the establishment of the Gandhi-King Development Foundation, which will be built by USAID under Indian laws. The bill for this foundation wants USAID to make a budgetary allocation of USD 30 million every year for the next 5 years. The foundations will have a governing council convened by the governments of the United States and India and provide grants to non-governmental organizations in the areas of health, pollution and climate change, education and women's empowerment.
