Home Minister Amit Shah to embark on Manipur four-day visit during which he will hold several rounds of security meetings to assess the situation and plan steps to restore normalcy, sources said.

Shah hasn't been to the northeastern state since the ethnic conflicts started on May 3. From May 29 to June 1, the home minister will be in the region. He will arrive in Imphal this evening.

To analyse the situation and determine the next steps to return to normal, they claimed Shah will attend numerous rounds of security meetings. He also he will likely meet with representatives of the civil society and other Meitei and Kuki community groups.

Addressing a programme in Assam recently, the Home Minister said he would soon go to Manipur. The existing problem would be resolved when Shah visits Manipur on May 29, according to Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, who made the announcement at a press conference in Imphal.

After a "Tribal Solidarity March" was arranged in the hill regions on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's quest for Scheduled Tribe recognition, the ethnic hostilities that have claimed more than 75 lives in Manipur started.

Report Ad Chief Minister N Biren Singh claimed on Sunday that security forces have killed close to 40 armed terrorists who had been torching homes and shooting at civilians ever since an operation to reestablish peace in the northeastern state was started. Tension over the displacement of Kuki people from reserve forest area sparked a string of local agitations before to the violence.  

On May 15, Shah issued severe instructions against the violent offenders in Manipur and guaranteed the state of the Centre's full help in establishing a permanent peace. The orders were given after Shah met with Singh, members of the Meitei and Kuki communities, and other interested parties in New Delhi to discuss the steps taken to bring peace back to the state.

Following recent violent battles between the Meiteis and tribals, as many as 10 tribal MLAs in Manipur from the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi group wanted a separate administration for their region.

The BJP controls seven of the ten legilsators, the Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) two, and the Independent one. The NDA, which was led by the saffron party, included the two KPA MLAs as well as the Independent MLAs.

The 10 MLAs' proposal for a separate administration for the Kuki-dominated regions of the northeastern state, however, was earlier rejected by the chief minister, who asserted that "the territorial integrity of Manipur will be protected."
