New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has introduced the Citizen Amendment Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader in the Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary opposed the bill saying that it is a bill to take society backward, whose aim is to target people of a particular religion. Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary referred to the Preamble of the Constitution amidst the uproar and said that it is against the spirit of the Constitution, which mentions secularism, equality, and socialism.

The members said that Muslims have been targeted in this. On this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that even this Bill is not against the Muslims and nowhere in the Bill is there any mention of Muslims. Amit has said that this bill does not violate any law of the constitution. On this, the members of the opposition in Parliament started a commotion. After ending the uproar, Amit Shah said that the bill does not hurt the constitution from any point of view.

Regarding Article 14 of the Constitution, Amit Shah said that most of the members are opposing this bill, according to them this would hurt the right to equality. Amit said that Section 14 cannot stop Parliament from making laws on reasonable grounds. In 1971, Indira Gandhi decided that all those who came from Bangladesh would be given citizenship, so why did she not give citizenship to those who came from Pakistan. Shah said that if the Congress party does not divide the country on the basis of religion, then this bill is not needed.
