SRINAGAR: An idol of Goddess Sharda is sete to be installed near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir's Kupwara district today, March 22, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to virtually address the event.

After 76 years, the Goddess' temple has been built in Kupwara's Teetwal area, and her idol has been brought there from the Shingeri Temple in Karnataka.

Installation of the idol takes place on "Navreh," the first day of the Kashmiri Hindu New Year.

Before Partition, Teetwal served as the temple of Goddess Sharda's historical base camp.

On the banks of the Krishenganga river, the old temple and a nearby gurdwara were destroyed by tribal attackers in 1947.

Muslims in the area have warmly embraced the placement of the deity's idol and the building of the temple in Teetwal because they think that the historic repair will restore the region's dignity and status as a revered pilgrimage site, which it had long since lost.

Scholars from Central Asia and India used to travel to Sharada Peeth, a historic centre of learning.

Sharda Peeth was one of the most renowned temple institutions on the subcontinent between the sixth and the twelfth centuries.

Over 100 priests from the Shingeri Mutt in Karnataka are among the hordes of worshippers and academics who have arrived at Teetwal to take part in the historic religious ceremony on Wednesday.

To take part in the event, some 100 priests from Shingeri Math in Karnataka have also reached Teetwal. Members of the Committee Jai Krishan Bhan, Ravinder Bakshi, Surinder Mirza, and M K Monga travelled with the yatra. It is said, Dr. Agnishekhar, the Panun Kashmir convener, and Kiran Wattal, the chairman of the Vishaw Kashmiri Samaj, have also arrived in Teetwal in preparation for tomorrow's event.
