London: In a letter to the House of Lords, Amnesty International UK pleaded with its members to vote against a bill on illegal immigration that it dubbed "racist and xenophobic."

Prior to the bill's second reading on Wednesday, the letter was sent.

The bill would cause serious harm to refugees and victims of human trafficking, according to the organization's UK chief executive officer, Sacha Deshmukh, and it would also deny British residents their right to British citizenship.

He continued by saying that it would harm the rights of refugees everywhere and set a risky precedent internationally.

Deshmukh stated: "Despite many flaws, the programmes for Ukrainian refugees demonstrate that the government is capable of handling some international crises but not others.

He said the European Convention on Human Rights, which the UK helped to draught, and the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, both of which were "blatantly violated" by the bill.

Amnesty has urged the government to drop the immigration bill and instead concentrate on creating an effective immigration system that upholds human rights and is "prepared to respond" to all international situations.
