Colombo: Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Gopal Bagle on Saturday expressed happiness over PM Mahinda Rajapaksa's convincing victory of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Perumna (SLPP) in the parliamentary elections. The High Commission said in a statement that the strong mandate received by PM Mahinda would provide a new opportunity for New Delhi and Colombo to increase bilateral engagement, including reducing the adverse economic effects of the coronavirus.
SLLP has achieved its target by winning 145 seats in the 225-member legislature in the country's parliamentary elections. It can also rely on the support of at least 5 colleagues. During the meeting with Rajapaksa, Bagley began to recall the phone conversation between PM Modi and the leader of Sri Lanka. The statement said that the High Commissioner recalled that PM Modi had appreciated the people and government of Sri Lanka for the successful conduct of the elections and accepted the impressive electoral performance of the SLPP.
Bagle has reiterated India's Government's strong desire and commitment to work closely with the new government and parliament in Sri Lanka to further strengthen comprehensive bilateral cooperation. PM Modi spoke to Rajapaksa on Tuesday and congratulated him as the initial results of the parliamentary elections have been released indicating the impressive electoral performance by the SLPP. The leaders agreed to remain in close contact as both countries address the challenges posed by the Coronavirus epidemic and have resolved to take bilateral relations to new heights in the coming days.
