AMARAVATI: The Union Cabinet has approved a new railway project worth Rs 2,245 crore aimed at connecting Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, with major metro cities like Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai. The project covers a length of 57 km and promises enhanced connectivity between central, northern, and southern India.

The new railway line will also provide access to important religious sites such as the Amarlingeswara Swamy Temple, Amaravati Stupa, Dhyana Buddha statue, and Undavalli Caves. Additionally, it will connect key ports including Machilipatnam, Krishnapatnam, and Kakinada.

A significant part of the project includes a 3 km bridge across the Krishna River. 

Notably, a master plan has been developed for Vijayawada station, taking into account the growth of Amaravati. This plan is designed to meet the station's needs for the next 50 years, ensuring it can handle future demands as the region continues to develop.

The project is expected to generate employment for 19 lakh people and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 6 crore kg, which is comparable to planting 25 lakh trees.

In a related development, on October 4, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted for a new 56-kilometre railway line between Errupalem and Namburu, passing through Amaravati. This Rs 2,300 crore project is expected to further boost infrastructure development and enhance transport facilities for both passengers and freight services in the region.
