According to a statement from Anna's lawyer John Sandweg to E! News, the subject of Netflix's Inventing Anna series was released from prison on October 7 after having been held for more than a year. According to NBC News and Anna's spokesman, Anna will continue to live under house arrest in a Lower East Side apartment with electronic surveillance.
The fictitious German heiress was previously in the care of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in New York. According to The New York Times, Anna was arrested in March 2021 for exceeding her visa's validity.
Anna was given the go-ahead to be released on Oct. 6 by a judge, but she was detained for an extra day while she arranged her housing.

A representative for Anna explained to E! News why she wasn't released right away, saying, "As she must give an address for her place of residence, she must reserve an apartment. When they learned that she is a felon, she had a couple possibilities, but they didn't pan out." On October 7 morning, she was "still trying to locate somewhere."
Despite some difficulties finding a place to live, Anna has one wish that is very clear: she wants to remain in New York City. According to her spokesman, "She plans to live in Manhattan." Anna was detained in 2017 and accused of scamming or willfully misleading significant financial institutions, banks, hotels, and associates for a sum of money in excess of $275,000 before serving time for overstaying her visa. The following year, Anna and her attorney tried to negotiate a plea agreement, but the judge rejected their application, citing Anna's lack of "remorse" displayed.

Two years after being detained, she was found guilty of attempted grand larceny, larceny in the second degree, and theft of services, and she was given a sentence of four to 12 years in jail. She may currently be a free woman, but her lawyer says that doesn't mean she's out of the woods just yet. She might still be deported to Germany.
"After 17 months of immigration detention, an immigration judge recognized that immigration detention was no longer necessary for Anna and ordered her release subject to various conditions of supervision," Sandweg said on Oct. 6. "This ruling does not mean that Anna will get a free pass.

Her release "will be closely watched by ICE and the State of New York," the attorney said, adding that she will still be subject to deportation procedures. The evidence, however, "clearly established that such dangers can be more than sufficiently minimised by competent supervision," he continued, "as the Court determined."
