Kyiv: A significant Russian missile attack took place early Thursday, targeting national infrastructure in several Ukrainian regions, including the country's capital.

Air raid sirens were heard across the country. According to Mykhailo Podolić, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia launched more than 120 missiles.

According to the regional administration, Kyiv's air defense systems were activated to repel the ongoing missile attack. Explosions can be heard in the city.

Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv, claimed that several explosions rocked Ukraine's second largest city. According to Lviv Mayor Andrey Sadovy, explosions were also heard near the Polish border.

According to Vitaly Kim, the governor of Mykolaiv province in southern Ukraine, five missiles were reportedly shot down over the Black Sea. According to the northern command of the Ukrainian military, two planes were shot down over the Ukrainian region northeast of Sumy, which borders Russia.

According to the city administration, two private buildings in Kyiv's Darnitsky district were damaged by fragments from Russian missiles. According to city officials, an industrial facility and a playground were also damaged in areas near the Dnieper River. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The massive attack was the most recent in a string of Russian attacks against critical infrastructure in Ukraine. Since October, Moscow has carried out such attacks on a weekly basis, resulting in massive power outages and interruptions in water supplies.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko issued a warning on Thursday that the city could face power outages and urged people to stockpile water and charge their electronics.

The Ukrainian military claimed to have shot down incoming Russian missiles and explosive drones after earlier attacks, but some still managed to reach their targets, adding to the suffering of people in the bitter cold.

Authorities in the Dnipro, Odesa, and Kryvyi Rih regions claimed power shutdowns as the latest Russian airstrikes got underway on Thursday in a bid to minimize potential damage to critical infrastructure.

The United States agreed earlier this month to provide Ukraine with Patriot missile batteries to bolster that country's defense. Additionally, the United States and its allies promised to supply Ukraine with energy-related equipment needed to withstand attacks on its infrastructure.

According to Zelensky's adviser, Podolić, the Russian authorities want to "destroy critical infrastructure and kill civilians en masse".
