The BRICS foreign ministers adopted an agreement on 'strengthening and reforming the multilateral system,' while the national security advisers agreed a BRICS counter-terrorism action plan, the Union ministry of external affairs said in a tweet on Wednesday.

The Sherpas of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) reviewed preparations ahead of the annual meeting of the five-nation summit earlier on Tuesday. This year's annual summit will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and it is believed that the focus will be on issues related to Afghanistan. The meeting will be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. PM Modi is chairing the BRICS summit for the second time; he previously chaired the BRICS meeting in Goa in 2016.

Ajit Doval, India's national security advisor, met with Nikolai Patrushev, Russia's secretary of state, on Tuesday ahead of the BRICS summit. Both of them spoke on how the two countries can work together to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, and illegal migration.

They also discussed the need of building a state structure in Afghanistan by the people of Afghanistan themselves and the need to check any escalation of violence in the war-torn country. The BRICS summit is likely to see Afghanistan feature prominently as India, Russia and China are major stakeholders in the region.
