Apple Agrees to Adhere to Joe Biden Admin's Voluntary AI Safeguards

The White House announced on Friday, July 26,  that Apple has pledged to adhere to new safeguards designed to mitigate the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). This commitment places Apple among a group of over a dozen major technology firms that have agreed to these voluntary guidelines aimed at promoting the responsible development of AI technology.

Last year, the Biden administration revealed this initiative, which saw tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI come on board. The White House's effort was to encourage a collaborative approach to ensuring AI technologies are developed in a secure, transparent, and ethical manner.

The safeguards encompass a range of measures, including "red teaming"—a testing technique where AI systems are subjected to simulated attacks to uncover potential vulnerabilities. This approach helps identify flaws that could pose societal and national security risks, such as cyber threats and the misuse of AI in developing biological weapons.

In addition to these safeguards, participating companies are required to share insights and information about AI-related dangers and attempts to bypass safety measures with each other and the government.

Apple's recent introduction of "Apple Intelligence," a suite of AI features for its devices, highlights its commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The company has also partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones, ensuring users have access to advanced AI tools.

In response to the growing concern over AI's potential risks, President Joe Biden signed an executive order late last year that set new safety standards for AI systems. This order mandates that developers disclose the results of their safety tests to the US government. The White House described this executive action as "the most sweeping actions ever taken to protect Americans from the potential risks of AI systems."

Following the order, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a significant policy speech addressing the challenges posed by advanced AI. The discussion highlighted fears about job displacement, cybersecurity threats, and the potential loss of control over AI systems.
