Foxconn, a major Apple supplier, is reportedly planning to assemble iPads in India as part of its broader strategy to diversify its manufacturing operations beyond iPhones and AI servers. This new venture is set to take place at Foxconn's Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu.

In recent developments, Foxconn is evaluating plans to manufacture Apple's flagship tablet, the iPad, in India. This move signifies a major expansion of its current operations, which have primarily focused on assembling iPhones. Until now, Foxconn India, alongside other global contract manufacturers, has been dedicated to assembling Apple's smartphones.

A source familiar with the matter revealed, “Some rounds of discussions have already happened with the government on this. Their experience so far has been very good, and they are coming in full force. They will double what they have in the next few years, which includes iPhones, iPads, and some other products too.” However, the source also mentioned that the assembly of Mac laptops might take some time due to lower production volumes.

Inc42 has reached out to Foxconn for comments on this development and will update the story based on their response.

It's worth noting that several electronics companies have significantly expanded their presence in India recently. Leading this trend are Foxconn, Wistron, Tata Electronics, and Kaynes Technology. This development coincides with Foxconn's plans to invest an additional INR 13,911 crore ($1.67 billion) in Karnataka.

Foxconn's strategic shift away from China has been driven by disruptions caused by COVID-19 and ongoing geopolitical tensions. Over the past year, Apple has significantly increased its investment in India, establishing substantial manufacturing facilities in the southern part of the country.
