New Delhi: Apple's iOS 16.2 beta update is expected to start testing support for 5G networks on Indian iPhone models early next week. The action follows a government call for smartphone makers to release 5G software updates that would enable support for 5G network services in the country.

Apple had earlier announced that it would be updating the software on its 5G-enabled phones in India by December. The latest models, including iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and iPhone SE (2022), which currently do not support 5G networks in India, will be covered by the software upgrade.

The reportedly confirmed iOS 16.2 beta is a harbinger of the eventual full launch of 5G support in December. However, the Cupertino, California-based company has not provided an exact date for the national launch of 5G services.

iPhone users on Airtel and Jio networks will be eligible to participate in the beta software program from next week. This will give them the opportunity to test the pre-release version of the iOS 16.2 operating system and use the latest 5G feature services.

Apple executives will meet with representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Telecommunications to discuss their plans for a beta release of the iOS 16 firmware, which supports 5G carriers.

The upcoming iOS 16.2 public beta, which is speculated to roll out to all iPhone users next month, will support both Airtel 5G Plus and Jio True 5G.
