BUENOS AIRES: Following the Albicelest's World Cup victory, Claudio Tapia, the head of Argentine football, expressed his confidence that Lionel Scaloni would continue as national team manager.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) wants to extend Scaloni's contract by another four years after the 44-year-old guided Argentina to its third World Cup victory in Qatar earlier this month. Scaloni's contract expires on December 31.
Eight days after the Albiceleste's thrilling penalty shootout triumph over France in Lusail, AFA president Tapia told reporters, "I have no doubt that he will continue to be the head coach of the Argentina squad.

"We shook hands and said yes to each other because we are both men of our word. He is now travelling, but we will finalise everything as soon as he returns.

After Jorge Sampaoli was fired following the 2018 World Cup, Scaloni initially assumed leadership on an interim basis. After leading the Albiceleste to the Copa America and World Cup championships in the last 18 months, the former Deportivo La Coruna winger is now regarded as essential.

While Lionel Messi, Argentina's talismanic captain, was urged to reconsider his decision to retire from international competition after his fourth World Cup, Scaloni, for his part, has not disclosed his post-World Cup plans.

The 35-year-old Messi said he wants to enjoy playing as a World Champion after leading Argentina to their third World Cup victory in Qatar, hinting that he may change his mind and continue to play for his nation at least until the next Copa America in 2024.
