Arjuna awardees shooters get relaxation in rules to keep guns

The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that Arjuna awardees and players participating in national and international shooting competitions have been exempted from the stringent rules regarding gun possession after amending the Arms Act. If the Arjuna awardees have received the award in shooting, then the number of weapons will be exempt. If international medalists and well-known shooters can carry .22 caliber rifle up to 12, caliber center fire rifle up to eight mm, pistol and revolver of caliber less than nine mm and shotgun of caliber up to 12 bore.

However any national and international shooter who is exempted from the rule of holding guns for personal use, training or competitions, should be certified by the Ministry of Sports or National or State Rifle Association. This notification related to exemption for sportspersons has been issued by Punya Salil Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs. According to this notification, international championships include Asian Games, Asian Shooting Championships, Asian Women's or Asian Junior Shooting Championships, Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Shooting Championships, Olympic Games, World Junior or Senior Shooting Championships and Junior and Senior World Cups.

International medalist means a player who has won an individual or team medal in an international competition. A well-known shooter means a person who has competed in the National Shooting Championship's Open Men's or Open Women's or Open Civilian competitions according to the rules of the International Shooting Union and has achieved the minimum qualifying score set by the National Rifle Association.
