The Government of India decided to celebrate Armed Forces Flag Day in 1949. Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated for the welfare of the dependents of soldiers martyred in the security of the country. On this day, the proceeds from the purchase of flags are spent on the welfare of the dependents of the martyred soldiers. The money collected by Armed Forces Flag Day is spent on the welfare of war heroes, widows of soldiers, ex-servicemen, soldiers disabled in the war and their families. The journey, which began on December 7, 1949, continues to this day. Soon after independence, the government began to feel that the needs of the families of the soldiers also needed to be taken care of and therefore it decided to celebrate December 7 as Flag Day.
