New Delhi: Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has left for a five-day Maldives tour. During his visit, he will meet the Government of Maldives and the military chief there. The visit of the Chief of Army Staff is intended to strengthen close bilateral defense relations between the two countries. According to official sources, General Vipin Rawat will meet Maldives Defense Minister Maria Ahmed Didi, Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid and Chief of Defense Forces General Abdullah Shamal to discuss various issues.
The Army Chief will also call on President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih during his five-day visit. The main objective of his visit is to promote India's overall defense and security cooperation with Maldives. The army chief will deliver lectures on India's security perspective for the region in Maldives capital, Male. Army Chief Bipin Rawat has become the Chief of Staff Committee.
Prior to that the post was held by Air Force Chief BS Dhanoa. This post is given to the senior most member till retirement on rotation basis. Army Chief Bipin Rawat will remain the chairman of COSC till his retirement. The Chief of Staff Committee consists of the Chief of the Army, Navy and Air Force and the senior-most member is appointed as its head. The demand for this post had been in demand in India for a long time.
