An officer from the Delhi Police announced on Thursday that they have made an arrest in relation to the double murder of an elderly couple in the Gokulpuri area of the city.

Ashish Bhargav, a 29-year-old Ghaziabad resident who was having an affair with the deceased couple's daughter-in-law, was named as the culprit.

On Monday, the bodies of Radhey Shyam Verma, 72, and his wife Veena, 68, were discovered at their residence. The home was broken into, and money and jewellery were also taken.

Verma left her position as vice principal at a government school in Karol Bagh, Delhi. With their son Ravi Rattan, the couple had resided in the home for the previous 38 years.

Monika, the daughter-in-law, admitted to the police during questioning that she had planned and carried out the killings with Ashish and his friend's assistance, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey.

"In December 2022, Monika had the notion to murder the couple, and Ashish had agreed to assist her. On February 20, they decided to implement their strategy, and they chose to employ secret phone numbers. Monika received a new SIM card from Ashish who had made the necessary arrangements.

Ashish was detained in Ghaziabad, and he will appear in court on Thursday for additional proceedings after being placed on police detention. Monika is already detained by the police for four days, Tirkey continued.

The police officer said that efforts are being made to find Vikas, Ashish Bhargav's companion who is wanted in connection with the case and is missing.
