New Delhi: Chaudhary Charan Singh was sworn in as the fifth Prime Minister of our country. Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902, in the Noorpur village of Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh in a middle-class farming family. His family had a Jat background. His ancestor Maharaja Nahar Singh made a special contribution to the first revolution of 1887.

Chaudhary Charan Singh received his early education from Noorpur village and matriculation education from Meerut, after which he graduated in science and started practicing law in Ghaziabad by obtaining a master's degree in art. Chaudhary Charan Singh married Gayatri after coming to Meerut in the year 1929. Chaudhary Charan Singh joined the Congress party in 1937 and was elected from the Chhatrawali assembly constituency. After independence, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly three times in 1952, 1962, and 1967, as a result of which he was also given the responsibility of departments like Revenue, Justice, Information, Medicine, etc.

When the Janata Party came to power at the Center after the elections in 1977, Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister with the help of King Maker Jayaprakash Narayan and Charan Singh was made the Home Minister of the country. After this, the differences between Morarji Desai and Charan Singh came out openly. Thus, on July 28, 1979, Chaudhary Charan Singh succeeded in becoming the Prime Minister with the support of the Samajwadi Parties and the Congress (U). The farmer leader's journey came to a halt on May 29, 1987.
