New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, the hero of the JP movement. The JP movement, which started under his leadership, shook the throne of Indira Gandhi sitting at the centre. This movement started from Bihar. Socialist leader Shivanand Tiwari, who was part of the movement, says that at the time when JP's movement started in the country, student movements were going on all over the world. The background of this movement, which started in Bihar, is connected to Gujarat. In fact, the mess fees were increased in the engineering college there, which was opposed by the students. This movement became so widespread that the then Congress government had to resign. In view of this, a meeting of students in Bihar was organized by the then student union chief Lalu Yadav at Patna University. In this, a plan was made to surround the government over the problems of the people and students of Bihar.

Socialist leader Shivanand Tiwari recalls that March 18, 1974, was the first day of the budget session of the Bihar Assembly. On the same day, students took out a march to gherao the Bihar Assembly. By this time the name of the movement was not the JP movement, it was the student movement. The students' march turned violent. Searchlight Press, Nutan Patna Municipal Corporation, Rajasthan Hotel etc. were set on fire. There was fire in many places, many people were injured in this firing. Many people lost their lives. Later, when the young students saw that the movement was no longer going to work, Jayaprakash Narayan was requested to lead it. Jayaprakash Narayan came to Patna after treatment from Vellore. All the student leaders came to meet him.

He urged JP to lead this student movement. Since this movement had become violent earlier, JP first put two conditions instead of leading the movement. The first condition was - the movement will be non-violent. According to the second condition, everyone's opinion and advice will be there, but everyone will listen to him. Everyone extended their support to JP. From here, the students' movement became the JP movement. After taking over the leadership of the movement, JP first took out a silent procession. Everyone's hands were behind in this procession. It was attended by many thinkers and philosophers of the time, including Dinkar and Phanishwar Nath Renu. The number of people in this procession was limited, but it seemed as if the whole of Patna was involved.

Due to this movement of JP, the ground of power started slipping from under Indira Gandhi and later Indira Gandhi had to face such opposition that she did not have much time left in her hands. Jaiprakash Narayan had made successful movements like Bharat Chhodo with Gandhi not only after independence but even before that.
