New Delhi: Today is a great significance in Indian history for two reasons. One, on this day, in 1992, NASA sent its orbiter for investigation on Mars and the other today is the birth anniversary of Deendayal Upadhyay, a founding member of the Jan Sangh and the father of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Deendayal Upadhyay, founder member of Bharatiya Jansangh, was born on 25th September 1916 at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. At a very young age, his parents died. In these difficult circumstances, he completed his college studies and in the meantime, he was inclined towards the RSS in 1937. When Shyamprasad Mukherjee formed the Bharatiya Jan Sangh with the help of the Union, the Union sent Upadhyay to politics to see the work of the organisation.

As the general secretary of the Jan Sangh for 15 years, he strengthened the roots of the party. Carried forward the ideology of the Union and played an important role in reaching out to the masses. In 1967, Upadhyay took over as the party's president. His dead body was found near Mughalsarai railway station in suspicious circumstances on 11th February 1968. The cause of his death remains a puzzle even today.
