New Delhi: The Election Commission has withdrawn the national party status from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Communist Party of India (CPI). Not only this, but the Rashtriya Lok Dal (UP) and the Indian National Committee (Andhra Pradesh) have also been stripped of their regional party status. At the same time, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been given the status of a national party. At the same time, some political parties have also been given the status of regional parties on the basis of their performance.

The Election Commission has said in its statement that TMC, NCP, and CPI were given the status of national parties. However, they could not get enough votes to maintain their status. In such a situation, this status is being withdrawn from those parties. The Election Commission has also stated that these political parties were given adequate opportunities in two parliamentary elections and 21 state assembly elections. Now, as per the rules, these parties will no longer be national parties. However, these parties can once again regain the status of a national party by getting the required vote percentage in the upcoming elections.

With this, the regional party status of the RLD in UP, the BRS in Andhra Pradesh, the PDA in Manipur, the PMK in Puducherry, the RSP in West Bengal, and the MPC in Mizoram has been revoked. However, these political parties would still continue to be unrecognised. In addition, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in Nagaland, the Voice of the People's Party in Meghalaya, and Tipra Motha in Tripura have been accorded regional status. Not only this, but Kejriwal's party has now been given the status of a national party on the basis of the party's performance in Delhi, Goa, Punjab, and Gujarat.

What are the rules for giving and taking status?

To get the status of a national party, any party has to fulfil three rules. The first is that the party should have gotten 6 percent of the vote in at least four states. The second rule is that in all the seats in the Lok Sabha elections, at least three states should have gotten 2 percent seats. Or the party should have obtained the status of a regional party in at least four states.
