New Delhi: Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masatsugu Asakawa met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on on February 21 and discussed India's various development priorities.
Following the meeting with PM Modi, the Asian Development Bank said in a press release that president Asakawa informed him of the organization's intention to support the nation's goals for quick, inclusive, and environmentally friendly growth with support totaling USD 20–25 billion over the following five years.
PM Modi and ADB's Asakawa discussed a range of issues, including the bank's help with India's social and economic development as well as climate action.
Asakawa reiterated the bank's support for the G20 agenda while congratulating PM Modi on India's acceptance of the G20 Presidency. He said in the statement that "India and ADB have enjoyed a long and valuable collaboration, and we look forward to extending this to tackle the region's difficult development issues."
The PM's Gati Shakti (National Master Plan for Multimodal Connectivity) initiative, the construction of future cities, the mobilisation of domestic resources, and the strengthening of fundamental services in underserved districts are among the key priorities for India that ADB will support on multiple fronts. The ADB also stated that it will concentrate on assisting in the transition to sustainable energy and the decarbonization of transportation.
Asakawa praised PM Modi for successfully battling the Covid-19 outbreak and guaranteeing a speedy post-pandemic recovery, noting that despite the pandemic's setbacks, India continues to be the fastest-growing major economy, with an anticipated 7.0% growth in the fiscal year 2022–23. He spoke with Federal Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in addition to calling on Prime Minister Modi.
As per the report, Asakawa will attend the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting, which is planned to take place in Bangalore on February 24–25, and visit the ADB-funded Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System Investment Project.
ADB began doing business in India in 1986, and as of now, it has 64 projects worth over USD 16 billion in the country, spanning the transportation, urban, energy, human development, agriculture and natural resource, and financial sectors.
