Guwahati: The autumn session of the Assam state assembly is scheduled to begin on August 22, as announced by the Governor of Assam. According to an order dated July 18, Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has summoned the Autumn Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly to convene on August 22, 2024.
The order from the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat states, "In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 174(1) of the Constitution of India, as amended up-to-date, I, Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Assam, hereby summon the Autumn Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly to meet at 9:30 am on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur."
Last year's autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly took place from September 12 to 19, 2023. During that session, six bills were introduced to establish new universities and make significant changes to seven existing universities in the state.
The assembly also passed the long-awaited Assam Panchayat (Amendment) Bill, 2023, by voice vote. Other bills presented included the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2023, the Assam Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement (Amendment) Bill 2023, and the Assam Gratuity (Amendment) Bill 2023. Additionally, the Assam Tea Plantation Provident Fund and Pension Fund and Deposit Linked Insurance Fund Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2023, and the Assam Backward Classes Commission (Amendment) Bill 2023 were also introduced.
Earlier this year, the Assam Legislative Assembly held its budget session in February. On February 12, 2024, Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog presented the annual state budget for the financial year 2024-25, amounting to Rs 2.9 lakh crore.
