New Delhi: In recent days, there has been considerable activity surrounding Team India's selection ahead of the forthcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. This tour holds special significance as it marks Gautam Gambhir's debut as the new head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Initially, there were indications that star batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might opt for rest; however, both are now confirmed to participate in the upcoming three-match ODI series on the island.
According to reports, Rohit and Kohli have communicated their availability for the series. This development coincides with the BCCI's senior selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, convening via Zoom later today to finalize the squad. Despite earlier speculations of rest, the senior duo has opted to return, recognizing the series as Gambhir's maiden assignment as head coach. Both Kohli and Rohit have previously played alongside Gambhir during his tenure as a player for the national team.
Sources indicate that the selection committee has chosen Suryakumar Yadav to lead the Indian T20I team during the series. In a notable decision, Hardik Pandya, who served as India's vice-captain in the recent T20 World Cup, is reportedly not being considered due to ongoing fitness concerns. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the Indian side in the ODI format. The upcoming Sri Lanka series assumes critical importance for India as they seek to build momentum and refine their ODI squad ahead of next year's Champions Trophy, given the limited opportunities to play matches in this format.
