Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to lead a crucial cabinet meeting today to deliberate on the state budget and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. Uttarakhand, under BJP rule, has made history by becoming the first state to pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill.

Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah stated, "The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is also necessary for Assam. The state cabinet meeting scheduled for today will include discussions on the UCC." The concept of UCC entails a uniform set of laws governing marriage, divorce, and inheritance applicable to all Indian citizens, regardless of their religion, tribe, or local customs.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier emphasized that the draft bill for Assam would be tailored to suit the "Assam model." Sarma clarified that tribals in Assam would be exempted from the UCC, and the bill would be presented in the state assembly later this year.

"Assam will introduce its own version of the UCC following Uttarakhand's lead. We are currently addressing issues like child marriage and polygamy. Hence, the Assam bill will have some modifications and incorporate Assam-centric innovations. We plan to exclude tribals from the purview of the UCC," Sarma mentioned.

In June last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated strongly for a Uniform Civil Code, stressing that the nation could not function with disparate laws, likening it to having "different rules for different family members."
