Guwahati: On September 13, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned Islamist encroachers involved in a violent attack on Assam police in Sonapur on September 12. Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma claimed that the attackers chanted slogans similar to those used by radicals in Bangladesh and alleged that Congress leaders incited the violence.

According to CM Sarma, the encroachers, including women, children, and elderly individuals, were armed and organized by Islamist fundamentalists. This disturbing trend, he said, signals a dangerous future for the state. The attack occurred near the capital city of Guwahati during an eviction operation.

Sarma accused Congress members of fueling the violence, noting that the eviction process had been proceeding smoothly until Congress opposition on the morning of September 12 intensified the mob's aggression. The mob, chanting “Allah Hu Akbar” and “Nara-e-Takbeer,” attacked police officers and government officials with sharp-edged weapons and stones.

Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) reported that 248 Bighas of government land were cleared of encroachments and 237 unauthorized structures in the tribal belt were demolished. The violence resulted in injuries to 22 police and government officials, including a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), an Officer-in-Charge (OC), and circle officers. Two attackers were killed in the police response, and 13 people overall were injured, with two later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Guwahati Police have been tasked with locating and apprehending those responsible for the attack. The DGP assured that the use of force by police is being conducted in accordance with legal procedures, and the injured officials are receiving proper care.

The incident on August 12 had already seen thousands of Islamist land encroachers from Bangladeshi descent clashing with police and district administration personnel in Sonapur. The violence occurred in a tribal belt designated exclusively for the tribal population. Reports indicate that a systematic effort is underway by Muslim migrants to control Hindu-majority assembly constituencies, particularly in the Sonapur area. The eviction drive continued on September 13 with heavy security to prevent further attacks from encroachers.
