Guwahati: In a significant move aimed at curbing misuse of power subsidies, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam announced on Sunday that no subsidized power would be extended to ministers, officers, or government employees in the state. The directive came as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

During a recent interaction with officials from the power department, Mr. Sarma learned that a nominal amount was deducted from the salaries of ministers and senior officers to cover their monthly power bills. Upon learning of this practice, the Chief Minister promptly instructed the power department to install prepaid meters in all government quarters, including residences in the ministerial colony.

The installation of prepaid meters is intended to ensure that individuals occupying government quarters pay for their electricity consumption without receiving any subsidies. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to fair and equitable distribution of resources, ensuring that public funds are utilized responsibly.

Mr. Sarma emphasized the importance of preventing any misuse of subsidized power, stating that it is essential for ministers, officers, and government employees to pay for the electricity they consume at market rates. By implementing individual prepaid meters, the government aims to uphold principles of transparency and accountability in power consumption across all levels of administration.

This proactive measure aligns with the Chief Minister's vision of promoting efficient governance and fostering a culture of responsibility among government officials. It reflects the administration's commitment to prudent management of resources and ensuring that public utilities are utilized judiciously for the benefit of all citizens.
