The Assam government will conduct a leopard counting census for the first time in the state in order to lessen the probability of man-leopard conflicts.

North Kamrup Forest Division has launched an exclusive leopard counting census in Assam's forest and non-forest areas, which will begin on January 31 in leopard density areas of Amingaon in Kamrup district.

According to sources, 50 cameras will be deployed in Sila Reserve Forest, Changsari, NIPER, AIIMS, and other locations for the census. The camera trapping will take place over a period of 24 weeks, with data from each camera being extracted every seven days. Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya took to Twitter to say, "The 24-week camera trapping census will be the first of its kind in Assam!" Sustainable development is still a top priority for us, as is animal protection!"

North Kamrup Forest Division has planned a one-week execution programme in this regard, during which camera traps will be verified, maps will be studied, in-depth discussions with senior forest officials will be held, a volunteer participation plan will be developed, a field survey will be conducted, and a target location will be chosen. After the full strategy is laid out, the camera trapping will begin on February 7.
