Former police officer Thounaojam Brinda, better known as "Super Cop," joined the JD (U) on Sunday, just days before the Manipur Assembly elections.
Thounaojam Brinda, the daughter-in-law of R.K. Meghen, aka Sanayaima, the former chairman of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), will contest in the Yaiskul constituency, which is now represented by BJP minister Thokchom Satyabrata Singh.
In October of 2021, Brinda resigned from her position as an additional SP in the Manipur police force. Whether it's for the sensational seizure of heroin worth over Rs 30 crore or for returning the Chief Minister's certificate for meritorious service after the major suspected drug baron was released, she's been in the news a lot. Brinda is the first police officer from the narcotics division to get a gallantry award in Manipur's history.
During an event celebrating Manipur's 71st Independence Day, she was honoured with the Chief Minister's Police Medal. After the special Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) court in Manipur acquitted former ADC chairman of Chandel Lukhosei Zou and six others in a high-profile drug haul case in 2018, Brinda returned the gallantry award in protest. On June 19, 2018, Brinda, who was then the additional SP of NAB police station, led the operation that resulted in the arrest of Lukhosei Zou and seven others with a large haul of drugs and cash.
