Mayawati Challenges BJP: Award Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram or Stop Misleading Dalits

On Friday, Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its stance on the Bharat Ratna award for Kanshi Ram. Her remarks came in response to a recent proposal by BJP MP Arun Kumar Sagar from Shahjahanpur, who called for the highest civilian honor to be bestowed upon Kanshi Ram in the Lok Sabha.

Sagar, who described Kanshi Ram as a pivotal figure and 'Bahujan Nayak,' highlighted the BSP founder’s dedication to the upliftment of the marginalized and his significant contributions as a social reformer and politician.

Mayawati, in a statement posted in Hindi on X, expressed that if the BJP-led central government were to award Kanshi Ram the Bharat Ratna, it would be met with enthusiastic approval from the BSP. However, she demanded that the BJP either take decisive action on this front or cease its attempts to mislead Dalits.

She argued that with the BJP currently in power at the center, it is their responsibility to honor Kanshi Ram if they truly value his contributions. Mayawati also accused the BJP of neglecting Uttar Pradesh in the recent Union Budget, claiming that the state, which has a significant population and faces substantial developmental challenges, was unfairly treated.

According to Mayawati, the allocation of resources in the budget appeared to be driven by political motives rather than genuine public interest. She also noted that non-BJP ruled states are dissatisfied with the budget and some have even opted out of participating in NITI Aayog meetings as a protest.

Mayawati's comments underscore ongoing tensions between the BSP and BJP, highlighting broader concerns about political fairness and the treatment of marginalized communities.
