In an effort to "discourage donations," the Assam govt would distribute a reward of Rs 1.5 lakh to Bihu committees across the state. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the reporters in Guwahati on Monday that this was the case.
"We will provide a special grant of Rs 1.5 lakh to all Rongali Bihu Celebration Committees of the state who have been holding Bihu functions within the first 7 days of the month of Bohag for at least the past 10 years," said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, in order to discourage forcible donations from business people.
Earlier, the Assam chief minister has condemned the practice of Bihu committees collecting money from businesses in order to organise celebrations. He further added that collecting donations will now be considered a criminal offence in Assam. CM Sarma further stated that his government will soon forward a bill in the Assembly to address this issue.
"From now on, donation collection would be regarded a criminal offence in Assam," stated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. "The state administration will present a Bill against organised crime in the Assembly shortly," he said.
