The judicial inquiry into the Sipajhar shooting incident, which took at least two lives on September 23, last year, has begun. On Tuesday, a committee led by Justice (Retd) BD Agarwal visited Dhalpur in Assam's Darrang district to get first-hand information about the incident. The panel met with Darrang district administration officials, stakeholders, victims' families, people, and voluntary organisations.
"Today, the head of the committee made a preliminary visit to the district before the legal proceedings began. On Tuesday evening, Darrang deputy commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah told Northeast Now that he "visited the site of the tragedy, met with top officials from the district and police administration, and spoke to the people who had gathered at the circuit house."
"He (the committee's chairman) informed the public on the judicial hearing procedure," he continued. He didn't make any statements." The Assam government formed a judicial inquiry committee to look into the conflicts that erupted during an eviction campaign in Sipajhar on September 23, last year.
Locals protested on September 23 last year when officials from the Darrang district administration arrived in Siajhar-Dholpur with a large number of armed security officers to carry out an eviction campaign. Demonstrators attacked police officers and other district administration officials with sticks and other sharp instruments, turning the protest into a bloodbath. The police used lathi-charge as the situation became out of hand. However, so because the situation was still out of control and the police were being attacked, they opened fire, killing two people.
