Guwahati: Political turmoil has increased in the country for some time now, while two-time Congress MLA From Thoura constituency in Jorhat district of Assam, Sushanta Borgohain is set to join the BJP on Sunday. Borgohen had resigned from the party on Friday citing the changed internal atmosphere within the Congress. Assam State Congress Committee President Bhupen Borah accepted his resignation on Saturday.

The central Congress party on Saturday wrote a letter to state assembly speaker Biswajit Daimari asking him to disqualify Borgohen as an MLA under the anti-defection law after his resignation from the party. Leader of opposition in the Assembly Devvrat Saikia appealed to the Speaker to take the necessary action as per the 10th Schedule of the Constitution and disqualify him. After Borgohen's exit, the Congress's strength in the 126-member Assam Assembly will now come down to 27.

He will be the second Congress MLA to quit the Congress and join the BJP after Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. The development comes within three months of the formation of the second BJP government in the state. Former CM Tarun Gogoi's OSD and APCC general secretary Barnali Saikia Bora also resigned from the Congress on Friday. For the past few months, Congress has seen many of its leaders join the BJP.
