Guwahati: We all must have heard the word 'Chutia' at some time in our life. The word is used as a slang. This word is also a vulgar word. But have you thought that the word 'Chutia' can also be used as a surname of a community. This sounds strange, but it is true. Recently, a girl named Priyanka was not able to apply for the job online just because she comes from the same community and her surname is 'Chutia'.
Though her application was completed after talking to the authorities, but the problem she faced, Priyanka shared it with people on Facebook, after which 'Chutia' tribal community has come into the headlines. People of this community live in Assam and now people want to know about them. These tribal communities are the people of the Kachari class in Assam who use the word 'Chutia' as their caste. Here it is also called 'Sutiya'. The population of this caste in Assam is around 20 to 25 lakhs.
The 'Assamese Chronicle' of Assam records the history of the 'Chutia' community. According to this, the community is named after the Assiabhina, a settler who settled on the banks of the Brahmaputra river in the early seventh century.
