As much as 6,800 square kilometres of land in Assam have been eroded or encroached upon by residents of the state and four adjacent states.
In response to a question from opposition leader Debabrata Saikia in the House on Friday, Assam Land and Revenue Minister Jogen Mohan said that flooded rivers have wiped off or corroded about 5.35 lakh bighas (or 716 sqkm) of land in the last two decades.
Annual erosion has wiped away 1,141 villages, affecting more than 58,000 inhabitants. Minister Mohan stated that 5,028 of the erosion-affected families were handed landless citizen credentials, while another 23,995 were given land allotments. He said that four neighbouring states – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya – had encroached on Assam's forest and revenue land, totalling 332 square kilometres.
