BJP's treasury full, Congress's condition poor; ADR released donations reports received by political parties

New Delhi: Seven electoral trusts in the country have received Rs 258.49 crore as corporate and private donations in the financial year 2020-21. 82 per cent of this total fund has gone to the BJP. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an election reform watchdog, has given a lot of information in this regard. Let me tell you that electoral trusts are non-profit organizations. They make available corporate and private donations to political parties, letting us know that the concept of electoral trust was brought in with the aim of bringing transparency in electoral funding in the country.

The ADR in its report said that out of the total 23 electoral trusts, 16 have submitted the donation report for the years 2020-21. Out of these, 7 are the details of the funds received by the trust and the total amount donated out of them. Of the 16 electoral trusts that submitted their annual reports, nine have announced that they have not received any donations. ADR further said, "The seven electoral trusts which have announced to receive donations during the financial year 2020-21 have received a total of Rs 258.4915 crore from corporates and individuals and disbursed Rs 258.4301 crore (99.98 per cent) to various political parties."

According to the Association for Democratic Reforms, in the year 2020-21, the BJP has received Rs 212.05 crore and the JDU has received Rs 27 crore as donations. In the financial year 2020-21, 159 persons have donated to electoral trusts. 10 other political parties including Congress, NCP, and RJD have received Rs 19.38 crore as donations. These 10 parties include Congress, NCP, AIADMK, DMK, RJD, AAP, LJP, CPM, CPI and Loktantrik Janata Dal.
