AstraZeneca India Private Limited (AZIPL), the global capability centre (GCC) of the British-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, has announced a significant investment of Rs 250 crore ($30 million) to expand its Global Innovation and Technology Centre (GITC) located in Chennai.

The expansion plans involve creating approximately 1,300 new job roles aimed at driving innovation, enhancing operational efficiency, and optimizing processes across the company's global operations. Currently situated in 334,000 square feet of office space at Ramanujan IT City, the centre will add another 180,000 square feet over the next six months, making it AstraZeneca's largest global capability centre.

The enhanced GITC in Chennai will leverage cutting-edge technologies such as enterprise platforms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and supply chain analytics to advance healthcare outcomes worldwide. Originally focused on traditional IT support, the centre has evolved into a pivotal player in AstraZeneca's digital transformation journey, contributing to productivity, technology delivery, and innovation across the company's global footprint.

AstraZeneca's presence in India extends beyond GITC, employing over 4,000 professionals and fostering a skilled and diverse workforce prepared for future challenges. In addition to its technological capabilities, AstraZeneca in India also focuses on research and development, marketing, and distribution of innovative medicines in critical disease areas such as oncology, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, and rare diseases.

This investment marks AstraZeneca's 45th year in India, underscoring its enduring commitment to pioneering science and innovation. According to Dr. Sanjeev Panchal, Managing Director and Country President of AstraZeneca Pharma India, this strategic expansion in Chennai reflects the company's dedication to advancing patient outcomes through state-of-the-art technology, aiming to reshape the future of healthcare.
