Today i.e. (May 6) the birth anniversary of Adi Guru Shankaracharya is being celebrated. He was born on this day in 788 AD on the Panchami tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaisakha. Adi Guru Shankaracharya has attained knowledge of all the Vedas at the age of 8 years. It is said that in 820 AD, at the age of just 32 years, Shankaracharya ji had also taken samadhi in the Himalayan region. However, many differences have started to be made about the year of Shankaracharya's birth and the year of taking samadhi.

The birthplace of Adi Guru Shankaracharya is also called the Kaldi village of Kerala. Shankaracharya ji became aware of all the Vedas at the age of 8 years. He travelled to India and established four benches in all four directions. He was born in the Namboodiri Brahmin dynasty of South India. Today, the Brahmins of this dynasty are the Rawals of the Badrinath temple. Namboodiri Brahmins were seated on the throne of Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath. Shankaracharya ji had established Govardhan Puri Math (Jagannath Puri), Shringeri Peetha (Rameswaram), Sharda Math (Dwarika) and Jyotirmath (Badrinath Dham).

Shankaracharya ji did penance for 5 years at Jyoteshwar Mahadev Temple: A very ancient temple named Jyoteshwar Mahadev is located in the Joshimath area in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Regarding this temple, it is believed that Shankaracharya ji has also done penance for about 5 years here. At that time, after the closure of the vaults of the Badrinath Dham, Adi Guru Shankaracharya ji used to stay at this place for six months every year and do penance. There is a Kalpavriksha just behind the Jyoteshwar Mahadev temple. This tree is said to be of the time of Shankaracharya ji. The priests of this temple are Uniyal. Joshimath is about 101 km from Chamoli. After reaching Chamoli, Joshimath can be easily reached by private taxi or other means.
