Australia and South Korea agree to increase their defence cooperation

Seoul:  Defence ministers from South Korea and Australia concurred on Tuesday to increase defence cooperation, according to South Korea's defence ministry.

At the inaugural South Korea-Pacific Islands Summit in Seoul, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and Korean Defence Minister Lee Jong-sup had a meeting.

Lee expressed the military's readiness to participate in Operation Render Safe, an Australian Defence Force initiative to clear underwater mines in the Pacific, as well as Indo-Pacific Endeavour, a multinational military exercise led by Australia.

As part of steps to update a memorandum of understanding signed in 2011 with the aim of enhancing defence industry cooperation, the two countries agreed to hold working-level meetings.

According to a presidential spokesperson, Marles also met with South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol to discuss efforts to increase cooperation with nations in the Pacific Islands.
