Nairobi: At least 35 people have lost their lives, and dozens are missing following a dam burst in southern Kenya. The incident occurred amidst weeks of heavy rains and devastating flash floods, leading to a state of emergency in the region. Rescue teams are currently engaged in a frantic search for survivors amidst the mud and debris near Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County.

Governor Susan Kihika of Nakuru County has issued a warning, indicating that the death toll could rise significantly as rescue operations continue. The tragic event adds to the toll of the ongoing flood crisis in Kenya, with 103 people already reported dead and thousands forced to evacuate their homes since March, according to government spokesperson Isaac Maigua Mwaura.

Governor Kihika described the situation in Mai Mahiu as dire, with floodwaters sweeping away people and homes. She stated, "We are doing our best to manage the situation, but it is overwhelming. Our priority is to reach those who have been swept away, hoping that some may still be alive."

Access to Mai Mahiu has been severely impacted by recent heavy rains, with part of the road being cut off. Despite the challenges, rescue teams are tirelessly clearing debris in their efforts to reach survivors and recover bodies.

On Monday, the Kenya Red Cross Society reported that several individuals were rushed to a health facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods affecting Kamuchiri village. The organization noted, "The floodwaters are reported to have originated from a nearby river that burst its banks."
