Canberra: Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for governments to "step back" from people's lives and lift Covid-19 restrictions on Friday, as vaccination coverage improved in the country's fight against the pandemic's third wave.

According to sources, Morrison criticised violent rallies in Victoria against potential pandemic laws, but expressed sympathy for Australians annoyed by the ongoing restrictions. "I categorically and unequivocally denounce any form of violence, threat, or intimidation," he told reporters.  "Australians have contributed. It is now time for them to move forward with their lives and for governments to step back from theirs."

Australia reported 1,508 new locally acquired Covid-19 cases and 11 deaths on Friday morning, bringing the totals to 195,624 and 1,933, respectively. According to the Department of Health, 91.2 percent of Australians aged 16 and up have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 84.6 percent have been fully vaccinated.
