San Francisco: Mayor London Breed of San Francisco has kicked off the annual 2021 Turkey Giveaway event. Mayor Breed said the turkey giveaway is in its fifteenth year, with more than 5,500 turkeys handed to more than 85 locations throughout the city.
"With one in every four San Franciscans at risk of food insecurity, we know that initiatives like these are critical in helping our neighbourhoods make ends meet, especially during the holiday season," Breed said.
Every year, the Mayor's Office collaborates with the San Francisco Housing Authority and the San Francisco Human Services Agency, which supervises the city's food security programmes, to deliver thousands of turkeys to various locations, with an emphasis on marginalised families and people. In addition, the Housing Authority distributes hundreds of food baskets containing dry products to families and people residing in various housing sites for holiday dinners.
"Food security is critical to our community's dignity and prosperity, and the pandemic's impact over the last two years has only increased the need to support our community members' access to high-quality, nutritious food," said Tonia Lediju, chief executive officer of the San Francisco Housing Authority.
