Despite recent high infection counts, Austria has announced plans to lift most of its Covid-19 restrictions as of March 5. According to sources, the Austrian government eased coronavirus restrictions earlier this month, claiming that the situation in the country's hospitals had calmed due to the Omicron variant's milder nature.

Vaccination, recovery from the virus, or a negative test result, as well as most other restrictions, would be abolished as of March 5, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Restaurant and bar early closing times will be removed, and nightclubs will be allowed to reopen. Masks will, however, remain required in high-risk places such as hospitals and nursing homes. "We have not yet vanquished the pandemic," Nehammer told Austrian broadcasting corporation (ORF) in Austria, although he added that things are looking up. In recent weeks, daily infections in Austria have been hovering around 30,000.

Despite the loosening of limitations, Austrian health officials indicated on Wednesday that they will continue to enforce the vaccine mandate that was implemented in early February. As a result, all adults in Austria must be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Despite this, Nevertheless, Austrian Broadcasting Corporation  said stated that an expert commission has been formed to assess the suitability of the broad vaccine mandate, which is the first of its kind in any European Union country.
